Three things I realized this morning:

1. An early morning walk by myself in the brisk cold does a mama good.
2. Uhm, I can use my husband's credit card almost anywhere. On accident, of course. *wink wink*
3. Starbucks is probably the happiest place to be before 7am, especially during the holidays. They have a dog, which Miles LOVED, and a gander, which Miles found terrifying. Even just walking by the fence and hearing it honk scared him worse than we've ever seen! I guess to a pint-sized human, a giant aggressive bird with crazy eyes must look and sound like a Jabberwocky! Don't worry, we're not going to hang up any lights before Thanksgiving. But we are going to plan ahead and make this Christmas a peaceful, enjoyable one. For the last year (since Miles was born), sleep is the one thing I've needed the most and been gotten the least. Things are much better now, but our nights, mornings, naps, and evenings still aren't as restful as we'd like. Oh well, there's only so much you can do with a high-need baby who fights sleep!

The idea was Sarah's (to give proper credit). We filled empty half gallon milk cartons with water in a three step process and buried a dinosaur in each. During the party the ice blocks kept our drinks cold and later we let them out to melt in the sun.

The dinosaurs have come back just in time for Miles's birthday!

Miles's birthday party was on Sunday August 21 at Washington Park in Portland. It was a beautifully warm day and the theme was thoroughly dinosaurs. From birth, he never liked to just lay on a blanket and look around at stuff; he always had to be in motion, even when sleeping. Before he could crawl, this meant we had to be in motion all the time, but now he happily zooms around the room on his own and gets his hands into everything (you may remember that he loves the tupperware drawer in the kitchen).

This past weekend was our annual church campout. A bunch of people from our church essentially take over Metzler Park and have a great time playing, relaxing, singing, and eating together. This year we had an additional camper in our tent...

We've been ordering bulk foods from Azure Standard, a local online farm that "specialize(s) in natural, organic, earth-friendly foods and products." They ship from Dufur, OR (100 miles east of Portland) and we pick up our boxes at the drop site in SE Portland (10 miles from our home).

It's been nearly 2 months on the elimination diet, and it's been very beneficial. It took abut 3 weeks for my system, and then Miles's system, to completely flush out and become regular again. We wouldn't normally go in at 5 months but his bowel movements haven't improved much with the elimination diet. I have mentioned to some friends and family that we suspected some food sensitivities with Miles awhile ago, and when I eliminated wheat and soy from my diet in mid-November, Miles went from always fussy to smiling and peaceful. He stopped waking up crying, and started being more content in general. What a change! He was like a new baby!

I went on a fabric shopping spree yesterday (thanks Dad and Lynne!) and procured some fun flannel for cloth wipes. These are all cut up and ready for sewing into 2-ply pieces. The gold will be the backside for all of them. Banana butt! We're at week 36 already, and the midwives needed to know how to get to our place and what our apartment looks like. It's their "practice run" for the big event. We made our hospital transfer plan (in case of emergency, we are within a few minutes of several hospitals), finished up all of our paperwork, and got our birth supplies ready. That's it! On the 4th of July we went with some friends to Rooster Rock State Park on the Columbia River - about 35 miles east of Portland. It was overcast all day, but was beautiful none the less. We had a BBQ and played boccie ball as the river drifted by. Washington is on the opposite bank (left in photo above) and we were of course on the Oregon side.

Our anniversary was this week, and among other things to celebrate the day, we treated ourselves to coffee at Stumptown on SW Stark Street next door to where we had our wedding reception two years ago! Sarah had a soy latte of some sort (with fancy leaf in the froth) and Paul had a regular cup of coffee, black. We are currently signed up with Hood River Organic which is about 75 miles east of Portland. We prepaid for three months and every other week a box of fresh vegetables is delivered right to our door.
